About the Palace of Fine Arts
Located in the Marina District of San Francisco, the Palace of Fine Arts was built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The expo was a World’s Fair style event organized after the recovery from the 1906 earthquake and fire. Designed by Bernard Maybeck, the Palace of Fine Arts features stunning Beaux-Arts style architecture, an epic dome, lovely lagoon, and large scale green doors. Reminiscent of the decaying ruin of ancient Rome, the Palace of Fine Arts is one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks and acts as a magnificent local park where you will find many locals walking their dogs or enjoying a picnic on a sunny day.
The Palace of Fine Arts has been featured in major films such as Vertigo and Time After Time. It is also rumored to have been the inspiration for the design of Queen Amidala’s royal residence in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Best Time for Palace of Fine Arts Wedding Photos
The best time of day to visit the Palace of Fine Arts for photos is later in the day, about an hour or more before sunset. That is when the light is at its best. Weekdays are less crowded with tourists and visitors. If visiting on weekends, expect that the location will be extremely crowded not only with tourists, but other couples taking wedding photos.
Parking
There is street parking located on Baker Street at Beach on the lagoon side of the Palace. As a rule, you should never leave anything in your car when parking in San Francisco. Never leave valuables in your car. Take Uber or Lyft if possible so as to avoid having to park nearby.

Caveats
Due to the public nature of the space, and the popularity of the Palace of Fine Arts as both a park and tourist destination, there will be people in or at the Rotunda at any given time — even during your wedding ceremony. The Rotunda ceremony is never roped off. Therefore you should know that there may be people in the background during your wedding ceremony. You are reserving the Rotunda area, and you can rent chairs, but there is no way to keep people away from your ceremony.
